Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, wife of Assam CM #HimantaBiswaSarma, purchased over 18 bighas of land in Majuli, a river island, in two phases before the passage of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2024.

The land was bought in May 2022 and June 2023, prior to the amendment which restricts non-locals from buying land near "iconic structures" over 250 years old.

The new bill aims to protect Assam's heritage and culture by limiting land sales to "original inhabitants" (those with three generations of residency) in specific areas, but Majuli was exempted from this regulation until November 2024.
