Just like one does not correct a baby's first attempts at speaking, primary teachers and parents should not stifle young children's attempt at writing and spelling. A child does not need to know how to spell perfectly to begin writing (Giacobbe, n.d.) #CSUSMMiddleLevel29

There will be students that complain about writing. One thing that I can do to help prevent that is to show them that writing gives them a voice. Have them write about topics that matter to them. Allow them to show the power of their voice. -Cooper et al
Cooper had the some great ideas I will use in my science class like a picture writing phase; where I have them either draw or copy and paste visuals to convey meaning; which then they can do CW or GW. ELs will be able to brainstorm in their first language. #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
Teach ELs Students I care more about their ideas than the correctness on grammar hopefully will encourage them to write. I make sure their supporting student is empathetic and encouraging in the editing and publishing aspect. Lesson learned by Cunningham Ch.9 #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
I love the idea of journals (Literacy, Ch 8). It is interesting to see there are so many types of journals. I like the idea of interactive journals. My CT does something like this and she requires it to be on paper b/c everything is on the computer lately. #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
As discussed in Ch. 8 of Cooper et al. (2018), Readers’ Theater is an excellent way to get students excited about reading while also supporting fluency and comprehension objectives. I definitely plan to implement this strategy in my own classroom! #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
Creating a learning environment in which students feel comfortable contributing is essential to literacy instruction because students learn to make meaning through “negotiations” and discussions with others (McLaughlin, 2012, p. 434) #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
Through the reading of Ch.7 of Cunningham, Comprehension, I come to understand that this is the theme and importance of a young students literacy and must begin to develop early and can be done with strategies like questions on a beach ball about a reading. #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
"Discussion is a teaching strategy you can use with any group at any time to activate & develop prior knowledge" (Cooper, pg 110) I think that teachers sometimes forget this & use discussion only after lectures, but it can be used before to engage students #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
#CSUSMMiddleLevel29 I found it fascinating that the relationship between fluency and comprehension also relate to the amount of interest the student has in the content. When I am reading something I have little interest in, it is hard for me to make connections and understand.
A theme I have seen across the readings is the benefits of reading aloud to students. This is a good model for students who are trying to gain fluency. I was always amazed with how well teachers and other adults in my life could read aloud when I struggled. #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
I think comprehension vs. fast reading is one of the issues that college students face as well. Being a good reader does not always mean fast. But we are expected to read so much in a short amount of time so fast is sometimes our only solution. #CSUSMMiddleLevel29

There are different forms of instruction for reading. One that I found important to implement is guided reading because it is about concept and asking for higher level thinking from students
-Cooper et al
If we read aloud to our young adolescents early on in their life they are more likely to become motivated independent readers, please educators let’s work on reading to our students. This will improve their comprehension in the long run. #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
Aside from the core concept of engagement, there has to be a sense of expectation and responsibility that a teacher has to create; a social contract if you will, as to allow student to fully trust and become immersed in the four processes of learning. #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
According to the IRA and NAEYC reading aloud to children is essential to reading success! I was read to every night by my mother, feeling it was a tradition I read aloud to my daughter nearly every night before she started school. As an adult I love to read #CSUSMMiddleLevel29
#CSUSMMiddleLevel29 Reading "Dear Teachers: Letters to Another Hero", brought me back to where I was in grade school, and the somber feelings I felt that day at such a young age.

The article “Why address Gay Issues with Children” furthered my knowledge on the controversy of introducing sexuality to students in the classroom. One way to appropriately engage students would be to assign books w/ gay characters and then further elaborate.
