About the #Europeanrabbit #Oryctolagus #cuniculus, its #biology and its #parasite #Haemodipsus #ventricosus, and about its historical #biogeography on the #IberianPeninsula. The European #rabbit was originally widespread in parts of the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. Since ancient times, this species, which is the ancestral form of the domestic rabbit, has been introduced beyond its original range with human help, whether unintentionally or not. Today, however, O. cuniculus is one of the most dangerous #invasivespecies due to its #adaptability, as the species is now distributed almost worldwide and has even reached numerous remote islands. Invasive species can be considered dangerous, if they are able to adapt well to a variety of environmental conditions, reproduce in large numbers, and thereby exert a negative influence on native animal populations. European rabbits are widespread in #Berlin and are mostly found in parks or other open green spaces. Rabbits are herbivores and feed primarily on grasses and herbs. They are a highly sociable species that inhabit communal burrows that can be up to three meters deep and extend several meters. Communication can occur through vocalizations and #drumming with their feet on the ground, especially when danger threatens. The species is #crepuscular, but can sometimes be observed during the day in Berlin. The female sexual cycle varies from individual to individual. #Mating season in Central Europe is from spring to summer, although a female can produce five or more #litters per year. This ensures abundant #offspring, which is one of the reasons for the European rabbit's success as a neozoan. European rabbits can be hosts to various infectious diseases, for example, #myxomatosis, which is caused by the Myxoma virus, being originally associated with the common tapeti Sylvilagus brasiliensis, but which today is often found in European rabbits and can cause considerable damage in local populations. The #rabbitlouse #Haemodipsus #ventricosus (Polyplacidae, #Anoplura) is specific to the European rabbit and its domesticated form. This species is widespread worldwide in European rabbits, but is less common in domestic rabbits. However, under poor housing conditions, it can lead to more serious eczema and skin necrosis in the domesticated form. The authors F. Díaz-Ruiz et al. (2022) investigated the historical distribution history of the two #subspecies of the European rabbit found on the Iberian Peninsula: Oryctolagus cuniculus #algirus (#Oca) and Oryctolagus cuniculus cuniculus (#Occ). To this end, the researchers used existing data on the occurrence of populations on the Iberian Peninsula, as well as nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences, for their rabbit subspecies distribution #modeling. This allowed the authors to reconstruct the origins of the two subspecies after the retreat of the glaciers of the last ice age. The researchers see their study as a potential basis for making conservation measures on the Iberian Peninsula more effective in the future, as the precise historical and current distribution of the subspecies is important because the subspecies differ #biologically and #ecologically from one another and should therefore benefit from appropriate #conservation methods. I would also like to add that it may seem paradoxical that a species that is often perceived as a pest worldwide is #endangered in its #nativerange. #Cheeky! This #Mountain #Paca #Cuniculus taczanowskii has arguably the coolest zygomatic arch in all of vertebrate-dom. That #cheek isn't pathological, the #bone makes an internal and external #pouch. Barely visible externally. Purpose unknown. #Fossilcrates #mammal #rodent
