This 12th century #manuscript copy of Bede’s Life of St Cuthbert was produced here in Durham & is one of our most treasured manuscripts. It features extremely rare edge paintings – with St Cuthbert in pride of place on the fore-edge. #Cuthbertstide #OTD #medievaltwitter
When James Raine excavated St Cuthbert’s shrine in 1827 he also found the famous St Cuthbert Pectoral Cross of gold & garnets hidden amongst the saint's robes – almost certainly worn by Cuthbert during his lifetime, & buried with him in 687. #Cuthbertstide #OTD
Among the gifts which had been given to the Shrine of St Cuthbert were beautifully embroidered #AngloSaxon vestments given by King Athelstan in 934. They were discovered in St Cuthbert’s coffin when it was opened by James Raine in 1827. #Cuthbertstide #OTD #embroidery
St Cuthbert & his relics were brought to Durham 995, & a church was built to house his shrine. Work started on the great Norman Cathedral in August 1093 & was completed in 1133. The body of St Cuthbert was translated to his position in the Feretory in 1104. #Cuthbertstide #OTD
The 698 coffin of St Cuthbert features carved figures of Christ, the Virgin, apostles & archangels. It is one of the most important surviving wooden #AngloSaxon artefacts in the UK. #Cuthbertstide #OTD
According to Bede, when Cuthbert was exhumed at Lindisfarne in 698, 11 years after his death, his body was still perfectly preserved. So instead of a small reliquary for his bones, the monks made a new full size coffin, which still survives to this day. #Cuthbertstide #OTD
