As part of an in-depth audit of a billion-user application, we spent that last 3 months looking at obfuscated code, going over methods with the names LIZZIZ, LIZIZZ, LIZZIZI. It couldn't have driven us more to insanity. Obfuscation is a security measure, but paradoxically, it does affect the security of the app, obfuscated methods will requires weeks of analysis vs. hours by auditors and will result in security tools failing to detect findings as they can change the name of SDK APIs. Used to be rare, now the norm. Our last research introduces DalvikFLIRT and LLM-powered deobfuscator.
