The Gafat (Ethiopic: #ጋፋት) were a South Ethiosemitic-speaking ethnic group that inhabited large swathes of the areas historically known as #Wellega (mostly within and around the former Kingdom of #Damot [Ethiopic: #ዳሞት]), #Gojjam proper (Ge’ez: ጐዛም Amharic: ጐዣም/ጎዣም/#ጎጃም), and northeastern #Shewa/Šäwa (Amharic: #ሸዋ).

The Gafat homeland was reported in the Gädlä Yared (Ge’ez: ገድለ፡ያሬድ) to have come under #Zagwe (Ethiopic: #ዛጔ/ዘጔ/ዛጔይ) rule in the 12th century. The 13th century #Amhara/Ämhara (Amharic: #አምሓራ/#አማራ) rebel-turnt-emperor Yekuno Amlak (Ge’ez: ይኵኖ፡አምላክ) was supported by Gafat #Malassay (Ethiopic: #መለሳይ) in the decisive Battle of Anseta (Ethiopic: አንሰታ) against the Zagwe dynasty.

During the reign of Yəśḥäq I (Ge’ez: ይሥሓቅ፡ቀዳማዊ) (1412-1417), a number of Gafat communities such as the Malägwe (?), Abdəray (Ethiopic: አብድራይ), and the Härbawaš (Ethiopic: ሀርባዋሽ) south of the Nile were reported to have paid tribute to the imperial court in cattle.

Aläqa Täklä Iyäsus Waqjəra (Ge’ez: አለቃ፡ተክከ፡ኢየሱስ፡ዋቅጅራ), the author of the Gojjam chronicle, asserted that the Gafat were the original inhabitants and direct ancestors of the people of Gojjam prior to the expulsion of the Gafat by Emperor Susənyos I (Ge’ez: #ሱስንዮስ፡ቀዳማዊ) from their heartland surrounding the Mugär (Ethiopic: #ሙገር) River. The people of southeastern Gojjam are known to have admixed with them.

They were driven into a decline partly as a result of the waves of #Oromo (Ethiopic: #ጋላ) migratory invasions into the #Ethiopian Empire, as the Oromo had almost entirely driven the Gafat out of their land south of the Blue Nile (Ethiopic: #ዓባይ). Another reason for their disappearance was due to the fact that they were seen as outcasts by the Amhara. Their language is largely assumed to have died out around the of the 20th century.

They had become assimilated by both groups, but remnants of their culture still survive today. A variant of the traditional Amhara and Agew style of dance known as eskista (Amharic: #እስክስታ) that is performed mainly in eastern Gojjam has its roots in Gafat culture and is commonly referred to as the "eskista of Damot" (Amharic: የዳሞት፡#እስክስታ).
