🟥 🪴 Spotted dead-nettle (Lamium maculatum) is a fast-spreading, semi-evergreen perennial in the mint family, typically reaching 15-30 cm in height and much wider through creeping stolons and rhizomes. ❤️ 🔁 #DeadNettle #LamiumMaculatum ▶️ Its square stems are softly hairy and often tinged purple, rooting readily at the nodes to form dense, ground-covering mats. The opposite leaves are ovate to heart-shaped, 3-8 cm long, with sharply toothed margins and a softly pubescent texture. Most cultivars display a striking silvery-white central band or blaze that contrasts strongly against the deep green background, though solid green wild forms exist. From early spring to midsummer, clusters of hooded, two-lipped flowers rise in whorls above the foliage. Each flower is 2-3.5 cm long, usually rich pink-purple with darker spotting on the lower lip, though white and pale pink forms are common in gardens. 🐝The corolla tube is slender and curved, and the blooms carry a pleasant honey-like fragrance that attracts bumblebees and other long-tongued pollinators. After flowering, small brown nutlets develop in the persistent calyx. Completely stingless despite the name, it thrives in shade to part-shade and moist, well-drained soil, making it a popular choice for underplanting shrubs or filling awkward corners.
