As I prepare my talk for @GdgAsaba #DevFestAsaba2023, one thing I keep thinking about is this: The best way to start contributing to an open source project is by learning everything about it and using it to solve the problems it was built for. I detest the "contribute for the sake of contributing" mindset. In the long haul, it's a disservice to both you as a professional and the open source community you belong to. When I started with @sailsjs, I was tasked with building APIs (both proprietary and open source). I needed a framework like @laravelphp but for JavaScript. I found Sails and immersed myself, solving problems and understanding its strengths and quirks. I delved into the docs, gaining a deep understanding of the tool. Only then did I consider myself knowledgeable enough to start giving back. My advice is simple: start contributing by using the project to solve your problems. Not just demos but real-world, interesting problems. If you lack interesting problems, take @levelsio's advice and start becoming an interesting person.
