#DevilsDoorway (1950) :
A brilliant retrospection of racism within the Western genre.
Anthony Mann’s Devil’s Doorway isn’t your regular Western about a gunman versus outlaws—it’s far more about racism and the social reality of its time. This film actually makes you feel deep anger toward white settlers, and that, in itself, is a staggering achievement for any American film of that period. The story follows a Native American who returns from war with a Medal of Honor. But once his father reveals he’s Indian, his well-deserved hero’s welcome is ruined. He owns a large area of land, which white townsfolk wish to homestead. Will he give in? No. For an Indian, land is soul—you just can’t separate the two. Looking for a legal route, he hires a female lawyer who files a petition that’s instantly rejected. She then decides to appeal, seeking support from local white men to help the Indian retain his land. But plans fall apart when one of them stirs up a violent mob that’s ready to take the land, no matter the cost. The Indians are equally ready to die defending it—making the lawyer’s peaceful way even more complicated. With constant attacks and traps being set, will he be able to survive this war? Robert Taylor is brilliant as Lance Poole. Every moment of his performance holds power. His character is built on values, strength, and dignity—qualities we love in a Western lead. Louis Calhern also gives a fantastic performance as the antagonist. His presence adds the perfect weight to the narrative. Paula Raymond, as the lawyer, plays the classic vulnerable female figure, but her character sadly doesn’t grow beyond a few clichés. Still, she performs well, and the supporting cast adds enough substance to keep the story grounded. Overall, Anthony Mann’s Western is a bold and thought-provoking winner. Even if some dismiss it as propaganda, it gives a voice to a community that has suffered deeply—and tells a story that deserved to be told.
RATING – 7/10*

Have you climbed up underneath Devil's Doorway?
It offers a great little view of the lake and a unique perspective on the popular formation... Not to mention a great photo-op! 😉

Iconic #DevilsDoorway has been a #bucketlist portrait location at #devilslakestatepark since the 1860s. It not only provides a natural frame, but features the spectacular view of the lake and vistas beyond. Photo courtesy of Sauk Co Historical Society.
They call this the “Devil’s Doorway”... so I imagine it leads directly to the White House.
