Knowsley’s Bowring Park and Golf Course in Huyton now offers more than one type of green after it encouraged rewilding with native plants and created new natural habitats to improve biodiversity.
Last year its ‘Grow: The Sustainability Campus’ was named the Sustainable Project of the Year at the prestigious Golf Environment Awards.
The site has even off-set carbon from the nearby motorway using sensors and provided green skills training for the local community and businesses.

Kirkby’s £80m fully accessible Headbolt Lane station was the second new station to be opened in the Liverpool City Region served by the battery-powered trains from our new publicly owned fleet.
The new station not only allowed Kirkby residents easier access to the Merseyrail network but also offered cycle parking and links to active travel networks.

A-level students from Carmel College in St Helens were at the cutting edge of surgical training when they became the first young people to graduate from LCR Ignite.
£1m in devolved funding from the City Region’s Life Sciences Innovation Zone Programme, matched by St Helens-based Inovus Medical, allowed them to train the young people using their pioneering surgical simulation training technology.

Since May 2017, St Helens has been part of a Mayoral Combined Authority for the Liverpool City Region, along with Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral.
As a Mayoral Combined Authority, we use powers and funding devolved to the region from Government to grow our economy so that all our residents feel the benefit.
We’re investing in improving our transport system, creating jobs and ensuring people have the skills they need to get them, building homes, tackling homelessness and combating the climate crisis.
In recognition of our track record of delivery, from April 2026 the Combined Authority will receive the bulk of its funding in an Integrated Settlement from Government, bringing greater powers and flexibility.
To celebrate this new stage of devolution, we’re looking at what devolution has achieved in all six of the Combined Authority’s constituent local authorities, beginning with St Helens.

#DevolutionDelivers When the Covid pandemic hit, Alex was in Year 11. He didn’t finish school, leaving without proper qualifications and found himself at 19 not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET).
The Combined Authority's Households into Work scheme supports people who have difficulty finding and sustaining employment.
It was through this programme that Alex secured a paid placement as a civil engineering trainee at a firm helping deliver our new bike lanes and footpaths in the city region.
