The fact that the #hooded #pitohui (Pitohui #dichrous), a #species endemic to #NewGuinea, is one of the few known #poisonous #birds worldwide is also of interest from an #evolutionaryperspective. After all, other members of the genus also possess toxic skin and feathers. How did the #toxin get there in the first place? Vertebrates cannot independently produce #batrachotoxins, compounds also found in poison #dartfrogs; they apparently simply lack the necessary metabolic pathways to synthesize the highly specific, modified steroid backbone themselves. Like poison dart frogs, Pitohui dichrous acquires the toxin through its diet. J. P. Dumbacher et al. (2004) demonstrated that the toxin is likely ingested via #beetles of the genus #Choresine (#Melyridae). Scientists generally assume that these beetles, in turn, require assistance to accumulate the toxin, with microbial #endosymbionts and plants suspected of playing a role in the process. J. P. Dumbacher et al. (2008) investigated whether the toxin-bearing bird species of the genus Pitohui, native to New Guinea, are #monophyletic, that is, whether they form a single, closed reproductive lineage. Based on three mitochondrial and two nuclear gene segments, they reconstructed five independent phylogenetic lineages, thereby characterizing the species as having a #polyphyletic origin. Furthermore, the application of Bayesian ancestral state reconstruction indicates that toxicity also #evolvedindependently multiple times. © #StefanFWirth, September 2026, Berlin References: J. P.
