A.k.a.: YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH
It’s nuts to me how many times the Smithsonian has been tied to discoveries that vanish. Over and over again, newspapers from the 1800's to the early 1900s report the same thing; that giant skeletons unearthed from burial mounds, anomalous artifacts uncovered in caves, elongated skulls pulled from the ground. And almost every story ends with the same line “the remains were sent to the Smithsonian Institution.” After that? Silence. True story.
Like the Skulls of Sayre in Pennsylvania. In the 1880s, researchers reported finding skeletons seven to eight feet tall with elongated skulls in a burial mound. They were supposedly sent to the Smithsonian for study, but today there’s no record, no evidence, notta! Or look at the Lovelock Cave giants in Nevada, where miners and archaeologists claimed to recover massive skeletons tied to Paiute legend. The Smithsonian collected some of the remains, and again, they disappeared. The same story plays out with Cahokia Mounds, with anomalous finds in the Aleutians, and with multiple digs across the Midwest. True story.
How about the infamous 1909 Arizona Gazette story about a hidden Grand Canyon cave filled with Egyptian style artifacts and giant statues. The report claimed a Smithsonian archaeologist named Prof. S.A. Jordan was involved. Today, the Smithsonian insists no such person existed and no such discovery was ever made. Maybe it was a newspaper hoax, but the point is, this pattern repeats. Controversial discoveries get attributed to Smithsonian custody, and then they vanish into a black hole.
Even when we move away from the crazy “giant” narratives, the institution’s track record raises questions. Take the Spirit Cave mummy in Nevada, nearly 10,000 years old. For decades, the Smithsonian downplayed its implications because it didn’t fit the “Clovis First” model of human migration. Only recently, after DNA testing, was its true age and importance acknowledged. That was either really really slow rolling or suppressing inconvenient evidence until the narrative can be controlled.
I'm not saying every story is real. But the sheer number of times the Smithsonian’s name comes up in connection with vanished artifacts, giant skeletons, or suppressed findings is mind bending. Maybe some were hoaxes. Maybe some were misinterpretations. But when the same institution keeps appearing in the same role who takes possession and then denies it ever happened, you have to ask why? At some point, the pattern itself becomes the evidence. And I'm good at patterns.
