Update Delta has released a statement regarding #DL89 to Shanghai that returned to Los Angeles with an engine issue earlier today.
Delta: βThe aircraft landed safely after a release of fuel, which was required as part of normal procedure to reach a safe landing weight.β

Easy to say after the fact and from the comfort of the ground. We do not know what was happening in the cockpit or with the aircaft at the time. This event will be investigated. Pilotβs decision to dump fuel will be evaluated. #DL89
This could have been handled differently.
Aircraft dumping fuel is an emergency procedure to lower the weight of the aircraft. Helps with controlling the landing and reduces stress on the airframe, landing gear and brakes. It is not done to reduce the size of fire/explosion; thatβs a Hollywood technique. #DL89
@erte1226 @insidethebadge Not trying to excuse them for what happened but they were likely trying to make the plane less heavy when landing and also perhaps in hopes of preventing a larger fire and/or explosion if they crashed upon landing. @TomPodolec Any thoughts on this?
