After 3 years, there is now a new volume posted in the #DLDToolbox. It addresses the question if a child's language disorder can be considered developmental (making it DLD) or acquired. Find the full blog & pdf here: https://t.co/bf7JqtnjfX See instagram posts @dld_diagnostics
It's been a while since I launched volume 6 of the #DLDToolbox At the time, I prepared a full manuscript 'On the many terms for developmental language and learning impairments'. This manuscript has now been published (open access) in Discover Education: https://t.co/0dWxNd8cJM
@HABLAlab @josephhylam I’ve been trying together an ed psyc journal yo consider the academic paper to go with this #DLDtoolbox volume for months! Reject x 3 so far!
@SusanEbbels @emilycupcakezzz @APinchofSaLTs Thanks for the mention! Definitely agree that SEMH and DLD would be co-occurring conditions when the occur together. See vol. 4 of the #DLDToolbox https://t.co/H33DuL4vUY
Also, great point by @lilacCourt that collaborative interdisciplinary
treatment would be ideal.
Here’s a Venn diagram where I try to capture how these terms relate. Thanks @mcgregor_karla for the idea! #DLDToolbox
Children with #DevLangDis might be identified with the educational categories of Speech, Language, and Communication Needs (SLCN), Speech and/or Language Impairment, Specific Learning Disability, and there may be others. #DLDToolbox
Specific Learning Disorder (DSM) & Specific Learning Disability (IDEA) aren't synonymous even though they’re often used interchangeably. The disorder refers to a condition with a presumed biological origin. It may not be apparent until academic demands exceed capacity #DLDToolbox
#DevLangDis and Specific Learning Disorder also commonly co-occur. Take, for example, DLD and Dyslexia. #DLDToolbox
Poor academic progress is a reason to refer for a language assessment. Poor progress despite individualized, intensive, targeted instruction adjusted for the child’s language level is a reason to refer for a learning assessment. #DLDToolbox
Both #DevLangDis & Specific Learning Disorder will impact school learning across curricular subjects, DLD because language is a part of all school learning. Ideally, an interdisciplinary assessment would provide the best understanding of a child’s learning challenges. #DLDToolbox
☝️ Specific Learning Disorder is a problem with academic learning (reading, writing, math) in response to formal, explicit instruction. Oral language is not part of the diagnosis, although manifestations in oral language could occur related to the academic struggles. #DLDToolbox
First up in volume 6 is a comparison of #DevLangDis and Specific Learning Disorder. DLD is a problem with language (oral or written), which is learned largely implicitly. #DLDToolbox
I’ll be highlighting aspects of the volume over the week here and on Instagram @dld_diagnostics. #DLDToolbox
Volume 6 was challenging because the terms are used differently across educational jurisdictions & countries. Be sure to check definitions of (Specific) Learning Disability and the way the terms are used in your system. #DLDToolbox
Please be sure to read the full blog with this volume. It's the longest yet because there's lots to discuss here! https://t.co/SdLNw7FGQ0 #DLDToolbox
I'm excited to announce that the @OOAQ__ has produced a French translation of the #DLDToolbox! Thanks Anne-Alexandre Larrivée & team! You can find the French DLD diagnostics toolbox here: https://t.co/x4ED4exHVJ
Differential diagnosis of SLD is more difficult when comorbid with disorders like #DevLangDis because these disorders interfere with learning. Clinical judgment required. If another diagnosis accounts for observed academic difficulties, SLD should not be diagnosed. 🤯 #DLDToolbox
Working on a #DLDToolbox entry on #DevLangDis & Specific Learning Disorder. Read entire DSM5 entry on both today & finally found this helpful information:
SLD commonly co-occurs with communication disorders. This doesn't necessarily exclude SLD diagnosis makes it more. difficult.
These issues on the identification of dyslexia are also part of identifying DLD. I'm interested in how people use the term 'specific learning disability' in relation to dyslexia and #DevLangDis. Hope to take up this topic in The #DLDToolbox.
Volume 5 of the #DLDToolbox examines factors that inform persistence of language difficulties & provides indicators based on *current* evidence. Today's Instagram post has more on this. Please read the full blog for volumd 5 for more detail #DevLangDis
