Lost Conviction at the worst possible moment.

Late December 2023, I thought I had discovered something that could change my finances
USDT rate just moved to around ₦1200/$1
I was checking Coinbase one day and noticed something interesting: while the general rate had already moved significantly, I could still find USDT around the ₦800+ range there
That was when I discovered arbitrage.
Buy USDT cheaper somewhere, sell it at the higher market price
Simple, right?
I just needed a way to buy
The problem was that my Nigerian card wasn't accepted, so I started looking for other options.
That's when I found a Telegram group
Almost 5,000 members
I didn't rush in
I watched the group for almost two weeks.
People were constantly posting USDT trades. Buyers. Sellers. Screenshots. Positive reviews. Successful transactions
The rate in the group was around ₦700 per USDT, while I was seeing significantly higher rates elsewhere
Everything looked legitimate
So I decided to start small
I wanted to buy 50 USDT at ₦700
That's:
50 × ₦700 = ₦35,000
For every transaction, the admin acted as the escrow. I sent my ₦35,000 to the admin, so I wasn't even sending money directly to some random seller
I thought I was being careful.
Then the seller told me his Trust Wallet couldn't send less than 100 USDT
Honestly, I wasn't suspicious.
My money was already with the admin, so I figured, okay, I'll just add another ₦35,000 for extra 50 USDT
And this is where I made the decision that still hurts to remember
I had just received my school fees
Instead of keeping that money untouched, I started thinking:
"If I add another ₦35,000, I'll have 100 USDT."
100 USDT × ₦700 = ₦70,000.
If I could buy at ₦700 and sell around the ₦1,000–₦1,200 range, I could make a serious margin
I wasn't thinking about one semester anymore.
I was thinking:
"What if I keep doing this?"
What if I could repeatedly buy USDT cheaply, sell higher, and use the profits to completely change my finances?
For someone like me at the time, ₦70,000 wasn't just ₦70,000.
It was an opportunity.
So I sent the extra ₦35,000
Now I had paid ₦70,000 for 100 USDT
And then...
another problem.
Then another excuse.
Then another issue with the transfer
I started getting frustrated
So I went to the admin and asked for a refund.
That's when I got GRINCHED. 🐸
I was kicked out of the Telegram group
The group suddenly disappeared from global search
My chats with them disappeared.
I couldn't reach the seller
I couldn't reach the admin
Nearly 5,000 members...
Two weeks of watching successful trades...
Screenshots
Reviews
People supposedly buying and selling USDT every day...
And suddenly, nothing
That's when it hit me.
I hadn't discovered some brilliant arbitrage opportunity
I had discovered a very well-organized scam.
Looking back, I honestly believe the 5,000 members and all those successful trades may have been nothing more than a carefully constructed setup, possibly just one person or a small group running the whole thing
And the worst part?
That ₦70,000 was supposed to help me pay my school fees.
I eventually had to sell my laptop to pay my fees.
And I went for over a year without a laptop.
All because I thought I had found the beginning of a financial breakthrough.
Instead, I found out what it felt like to be Grinched
I didn't just lose ₦70,000.
I lost the laptop I depended on.
I lost over a year of having one.
And, for a while, I lost my confidence in my own judgment
The funniest part?
I had spent two whole weeks investigating the group before making the trade.
I thought I was doing my due diligence.
Turns out...
I was just giving the Grinch two weeks to gain my trust
