#DriftingFAD #tuna fisheries are involved in #IUUfishing. If you ignore #FAD #conservation measures and do what you please, you are NOT part of a #sustainable #fishery. https://t.co/I0nbvGMMdh

Two special sessions were agreed to try to make progress on overfished yellowfin rebuilding and improved FAD management.
It isnβt clear how holding two more meetings, where hundreds of delegates fly across the world, aligns with the adopted climate change proposal π«βοΈπ¬
@GlobalTuna Systematic non-compliance with #driftingFAD regulations exposed at #IOTC Compliance Committee https://t.co/ikG7g4NftC. >90% of #yellowfin #tuna caught at #driftingFADs are juveniles, impacting on stock recovery. This is NOT responsible sourcing!
It is high time that #industrial #tuna #fisheries operating on the #high #seas act more responsibly. The lack of #transparency in many of their operations is unacceptable. #driftingFAD #slavery #BiodiversityLoss #SDGs #ethicaltuna #Harmful #subsidies #equity #justice #ocean #CSR
The #HighSeas lie beyond national waters, i.e. outside of the Exclusive Economic Zone of any country. They are largely unexplored, deep, & are teeming with marine life (including millions of undiscovered species). The high seas are therefore critical to all life on Earth.
I fully agree that #driftingFAD discussions need to be "rooted in science". Recent research shows that >90% of FADs are not retrieved after deployment & most are still constructed using #plastics & netting. These FADs continue to ghost fish long after they been lost or abandoned
@GlobalTuna #IOTC members who did not support more effective #driftingFAD management undermine #yellowfin #tuna stock rebuilding. How can the stock ever be rebuilt while millions of juveniles are caught around FADs, never growing to a size to feed coastal communities!? #inequity #SDGs
@OpagacJulio @EU_MARE @IPNLF Why has #driftingFAD data been kept a secret all these years? Even IOTC scientists are not allowed access to this data! There is no #transparency and there are no excuses for this.
Where are the #responsible #retailers?! Take a stand - demand improved #driftingFAD management before sourcing from these fisheries. Are you potentially supporting #illegal #fisheries?

#China joins call for improved #driftingFAD management at #IOTC. "This delegation wishes the CPCs that have purse seiner fisheries can show their flexibility in terms of no. of deployed FAD, no. of FAD set and duration and area of prohibition of using FAD"

A 50% reduction in #driftingFAD effort could increase biomass of #tuna & #sharks & return ecosystem structure to a pre-industrial fishing state within 10 years".
Just a FAD? https://t.co/PvqMJzsGgI

@sustainpacfish @pnatunatweet FAD closures implented by @pnatunatweet are commendable. However the IOTC proposal also calls for full #transparency and accountability of #driftingFAD owners to limit the serious ecological damage caused by these devices. No purse seine tuna fisheries are doing this yet! #tuna
