Naturally, this is met with hostility in the #Kremlin, which has led to Russian sanctions against Armenian products. For example, Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma (the lower house of Russia’s parliament), said today: “I would like Armenia not to pursue a hypocritical policy. Because if Armenia adopts a law expressing its intention to join the European Union, then why are you using the opportunities provided by the EAEU?” In reality, in international politics, it is extremely rare for one side to get everything while the other gets nothing. Why did #Russia pressure Armenia in 2013 to become a founding member of the EAEU? Russia needs this economic union to expand its economic and political influence. The Kremlin sees Armenia as a foothold for expanding its influence not only in the #SouthCaucasus, but also across the #MiddleEast. One of Russia’s long-standing goals has been to bring Iran into the EAEU. And this could only become possible with Armenia as a member of the Union — or another country bordering Iran. But given the geography and the current geopolitical situation, Russia needs Armenia. Thus, apart from the fact that Armenia is a net contributor to the EAEU (it pays more into the Union than it receives), Armenia is also strategically important to the EAEU — and to Russia — as a gateway for expansion to the south. Therefore, I would disagree with Volodin. It is not only Armenia that benefits from EAEU membership. Russia also gains from Armenia’s membership; otherwise, Moscow would not react so strongly to Yerevan’s new policy. #EU
