#Zimbabwe Update from #Matapi Flats MATAPI FLATS RENOVATION: #EDAID1’S COMMUNITY-CENTRED APPROACH PRAISED AS A MODEL FOR LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND✅ #Mbare, #Harare – Matapi Flats Service Users commends ED AID1 for its community-centred approach to the ongoing renovation of Matapi Flats, demonstrated through continued consultation with the City of Harare @cityofharare2 councils and service users. Yesterday’s engagement between the council officals, ED AID1, and residents was not merely a meeting. It was a practical expression of people-centred governance. It gave residents a voice in decisions that affect their daily lives, restored trust, and reinforced the principle that development must be done with people, not to them. We commend ED AID1 for listening first and building later. By treating residents as partners rather than passive recipients, ED AID1 has set a strong example for how urban renewal should be conducted in Zimbabwe. This approach gives vulnerable groups women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and the unemployed a seat at the table. It reduces conflict, delays, and costly mistakes. It builds ownership, so renovated blocks are more likely to be maintained. And it restores trust between communities and public institutions. Continued consultation is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Matapi Flats houses close to 13,000 people. The renovation is a human-centred intervention aimed at restoring dignity after years of blocked sewers, unsafe sanitation, and neglected housing. For the project to succeed, residents must be kept informed about timelines, water disruptions, temporary facilities, and maintenance responsibilities. Continuous two-way communication allows the council and ED AID1 to adjust plans in real time and prevent accidents, health hazards, and frustration. We also note that the renovation follows a High Court order requiring the City of Harare to refurbish Matapi and other Mbare flats. In this context, consultation is a legal and constitutional obligation. It is how the council demonstrates accountability to the people it serves. Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Local Government has similarly emphasised that oversight visits are part of accountable and people-centred governance. ED AID1’s approach also supports its broader mission of strengthening communities through job creation, local economic development, and targeted social support. Consulting with service users helps identify local employment opportunities, understand which social programmes are most needed, and ensure the project preserves Matapi’s cultural significance while modernising it. Most importantly, this approach advances President Mnangagwa’s vision of leaving no one behind. Under Vision 2030 and the Second Republic, Zimbabwe is striving for inclusive, prosperous, and empowered communities where no one is forgotten. ED AID1’s community-centred model turns that vision into practical action. It embodies the spirit of “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo / Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo.” It restores dignity, promotes local economic empowerment, strengthens partnership governance, and builds sustainability. We therefore call on all stakeholders the City of Harare, ED AID1, government departments, and residents to sustain this rhythm of consultation. We urge #EDAID1 to document the lessons from Matapi and replicate this approach in other communities. If this model is maintained, Matapi Flats can become a blueprint for people-centred urban renewal in Zimbabwe. We commend ED AID1. We commend the residents for their patience and participation. And we recommit ourselves to working together so that no one is left behind. @ZimGvt_NDS1 @Zim_Vision2030 #NyikaInovakwaNeveneVayo #IlizweLakhiwaNgabanikaziBalo #EconomicChimurenga 🧱by 🧱🇿🇼

Update from #Matapi Flats

MATAPI FLATS RENOVATION: #EDAID1’S COMMUNITY-CENTRED APPROACH PRAISED AS A MODEL FOR LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND✅

#Mbare, #Harare – Matapi Flats Service Users commends ED AID1 for its community-centred approach to the ongoing renovation of Matapi Flats, demonstrated through continued consultation with the City of Harare @cityofharare2 councils and service users.

We also note that the renovation follows a High Court order requiring the City of Harare to refurbish Matapi and other Mbare flats. #Zimbabwe UPDATE: #Matapi Flats Renovation Project by #EDAID1 - #EDWORKS✅ 1. Background and Context Matapi Flats, located in Harare's Mbare high-density suburb, is one of the city's oldest residential complexes. Built decades ago, the 14 three-storey blocks have suffered from severe overcrowding. Years of neglect led to broken plumbing, collapsing walls, inadequate sanitation, and unsafe electrical wiring, with conditions described by housing advocates as "unfit for human habitation". 2. The #EDAID1 Intervention The renovation project is being spearheaded by Engineer Collins Takunda Mnangagwa through his #EDAID1 initiative, in partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe. A technical team led by project CEO Mr. Brian Pande was dispatched to assess and begin restoration works. The project aims to improve living conditions for residents while preserving one of Harare's oldest high-density residential complexes. 3. Scope of Work and Implementation The rehabilitation works have included painting, installation of showers and toilets, upgrading of the sewer system, and improved lighting across the estate. The project has engaged local artisans to carry out plumbing repairs and repainting, representing a departure from past approaches and contributing to local economic development. 4. Stakeholder Reception and Parliamentary Endorsement The project has received significant praise from multiple stakeholders: · Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Local Government and National Housing: Led by chairperson Maxmore Njanji, the committee described the project as "a model for urban renewal and an example of how public-private partnerships can help address the country's housing challenges". Njanji stated, "As Parliament we are happy with the progress that we have seen. We have also observed the goodness of Private Public Partnerships where private players are playing a big role in complementing government efforts". · Local Leadership: Mbare legislator Martin Matinyanya welcomed the transformation, noting that the project "had restored hope to residents who had endured years of deteriorating infrastructure". Councillor Chanachimwe commended President Mnangagwa for responding to residents' concerns. · City of Harare: Director of Housing and Community Services Addmore Nhekairo confirmed that the refurbishment aligns with the city's broader urban renewal strategy and the recently completed master plan. 5. Strategic Alignment and Broader Impact The project is aligned with @ZimGvt_NDS1 (NDS2) and forms part of Parliament's oversight role in assessing housing delivery and urban regeneration. The parliamentary committee noted that lessons from the Mbare project could inform similar urban renewal programmes in other towns and cities across the country. The initiative is also part of a broader rehabilitation effort in Mbare, which has 58 blocks of flats in total, with work beginning at Matapi before being extended to other blocks. 6. Assessment and Conclusion The EDAID1-led renovation of Matapi Flats represents a significant and largely successful intervention in one of Harare's most challenging residential areas. Key strengths of the project include: · Effective Public-Private Partnership: The collaboration between #EDAID1 and the Government demonstrates a viable model for addressing urban decay. · Stakeholder Confidence: The endorsement from Parliament, local councillors, and city officials underscores the project's credibility and impact. · Community Benefit: The renovation has restored dignity and hope to thousands of residents who had long endured substandard living conditions. While the project has been widely praised, ongoing maintenance by residents and continued extension to other blocks in Mbare will be essential to sustaining these gains. Overall, the Matapi Flats renovation stands as a commendable example of targeted urban renewal and multi-stakeholder collaboration. @Zim_Vision2030 #NyikaInovakwaNeveneVayo
