July 23rd marks the 10th anniversary of the #EnlightenmentMovement martyrs. We remember the millions who bravely sought justice, equality, and the right to light, a right denied before the world's eyes. Sadly, our young blossoms perished too soon.

In 2016, I travelled to Afghanistan to research the systemic discrimination faced by Hazaras. I interviewed a young girl from the #EnlightenmentMovement.
She told me that every time she left home to protest, she recited her Shahada and said goodbye to her family, unsure if she would return.
I asked her why she would still go, knowing the risks.
Through tears, she said: “Because I feel the discrimination in my bones.”
That moment stayed with me. It revealed a truth that statistics can’t capture - that discrimination is not abstract; it is lived, inherited, and carried across generations.
Listening to Esmat, I realised how deep this pain runs - and how little the world truly understands it.

Commemorating the Dehmazang martyrs: a testament to the courage of the Enlightenment Movement. They died for justice, but their voices echo on. To remain silent and forget is to allow oppression to repeat itself.
