Imagine back in 1997, you want a set which assigns hierarchy to players. In the hindsight, parallels with different print runs give tiers. The EC Now set put 80 parallels, /1, /2, โฆ /79, /80, one for different player. A player is nth player in the set, his print run is /n.
Is tier purely about superiority? Not quite, because Jordan /1, and Kobe /2 will be hard to complete the set and too few biggest chases. Without ample data (2nd year of systematic serialization on base cards), Mike Philips already knew something around /10 is possible with dedication, but scarce and instant grail status. Kobe being /8 is natural and Jordan being being /9 (same amount to alien punks) pays hompage to Dream Team jersey which kick-started NBA globalization.
