St #Etheldreda’s Day. Here is @HexhamAbbey, Northumberland, founded in 674 thanks to her benefaction. One of the many Saxon saints associated with this great church.

Saint #Etheldreda’s Day. As Queen of Northumbria she endowed St #Wilfrid with estates enabling him to establish his great church at Hexham, now the Abbey. So she is, surely, its true founder. Today is the anniversary of her death in 679. This icon of her is in @HexhamAbbey.

@CarolineCoramUK I agree, the detail is stunning … enjoyed learning the story behind it. 🎧

Remembering too today, of course, @HexhamAbbey, founded by St Wilfrid in 674 thanks to the benefaction of St #Etheldreda. This is the crypt of her & his church, entirely constructed out of Roman stones from the nearby town of Coria (Corbridge).

Thinking of @Ely_Cathedral today, the Feast of St #Etheldreda. She founded her double monastery here exactly 1350 years ago. This is the site of her shrine in the Cathedral.

Happy #StÆthelthryth's (aka #Etheldreda, aka #Audrey) Day today everybody, especially to @Ely_Cathedral and @RevRichardColes' dog! A reminder that whatever you do today, don't let it be tawdry!
Friday’s #ImageOfTheDay.
St #Etheldreda (Aethelthryth) died #OnThisDay in 679. Queen to Ecgfrith of Northumbria, she endowed lands to St Wilfrid enabling him to found his Cathedral at Hexham in 674. In this icon she is holding Wilfrid’s church at @HexhamAbbey.

#histBookChat 2023 marks 1350 years since St #Etheldreda established a monastery in #Ely in AD 673. A remarkable woman of influence and authority. What was it like to be a Princess, an Abbess and a Saint? What power did women in her position wield?

Greetings to @Ely_Cathedral on the Feast of the Translation of the Relics of its foundress St #Etheldreda. Remembering also @HexhamAbbey: it was she who gave lands to St #Wilfrid to establish his cathedral at #Hexham.

Fuelled by childhood memories, I have written a little piece (crikey, it's been a while...) for today, which I hope to play after evensong @GreatStMarys this afternoon. It celebrates the feast of the saint so closely linked with the Cathedral of our diocese, #Etheldreda.

Married off twice for political reasons, she wouldn't sleep with either husband, left her second (the king of Northumbria) to become a nun, evaded a posse of his soldiers, and walked from the Scottish border to Ely to found her own monastery #Etheldreda #Aethelthryth
Happy St Æthelryth's Day, everyone (#Etheldreda). Time to kick the Tories out of #Wakefield and #TivertonandHoniton and let's never forgive them for destroying this country six years ago when they ceased being @Conservatives and became seedy and mendacious English Nationalists
@gothicheart81 @ManchSg @FrMartinFlatman @northumbriana @LincsCathedral @durhamcathedral We are indebted to #Etheldreda here in Tynedale. There’d have been no @HexhamAbbey without her grant of land to #Wilfrid (another of #Aidan’s boys).
Today is the feast of St Etheldreda (St Æthelthryth), Abbess of Ely, who died #OnThisDay in 679.
One of the most important female saints of early medieval England, Bede wrote an acrostic hymn in her honour.

#OnThisDay Saint #Aethelthryth (#Etheldreda, #Audrey) died in 679. Anglo-Saxon princess, married twice but stayed celibate, gave up being queen of #Northumbria & became abbess at #Ely, but souvenirs of her were infamous for being tatty or ‘tawdry’. #medievalsaints

@Ely_Cathedral Good memories of preaching at last year’s festival when @DagmarKirk (once of @HexhamAbbey whose foundation was thanks to #Etheldreda’s endowment) was installed as Bishop of Huntingdon.
Greetings from Tynedale to @Ely_Cathedral on the Feast of the Translation of St #Etheldreda. This is the crypt of @HexhamAbbey, founded by St Wilfrid on lands she gifted to the church as Northumbrian Queen c674.

Today marks the feast day of St. Etheldreda of Ely. Facing many obstacles, she longed to be a nun. Her faith was persistent. She founded a monastic house in the 7th c. Ely Cathedral was eventually built around her shrine. #Etheldreda #Ely #Cambridgeshire
