🔎 The Detective’s Lens There’s a lot of discussion about the nightmare for the 16 children rescued in Ohio. One lesson from more than 30 years investigating crimes against children: Family members often come forward after a tragedy with claims that they’ve tried to get help for years. Those statements are not evidence. But they can generate investigative leads. If relatives are saying they repeatedly raised concerns, detectives should be asking: • Were there prior CPS referrals? If so, what decisions were made? • Were welfare checks requested? What did responding officers observe and document? • Were the children ever enrolled in school? If not, what educational records or truancy contacts exist? • What medical, developmental, or hospital records exist? Were mandated reports ever filed? • Were there prior custody proceedings, juvenile court filings, or protective orders? • Were there reports from neighbors, extended family members, teachers, physicians, or other mandated reporters? • Did multiple agencies each hold one piece of the puzzle—but no one ever saw the whole picture? That’s how investigations move from allegations to evidence. The goal of every investigation isn’t to prove someone right. It’s to find the truth. Children rarely become invisible overnight.
