At the #Evi4DevConference, the FP Impact Consortium convened a panel discussion on population dynamics with a specific focus on the demographic dividend and the benefits of making investments in family planning. The session highlighted the ongoing shift in funder priorities and the significant disruptions this has caused in efforts to sustain investments catered towards providing essential programming to Africa’s youthful population.
Though the full scale of disruption may not be known at the moment, the need to sustain the current gains and prioritize the youth is still paramount. With competing needs in the development sector, the Consortium’s mathematical modelling can provide key actors with evidence to make a case for increased investments in family planning, and help propel policies and programmes, including budgetary allocations, that not only improve health outcomes but guarantee financial prosperity.
Moreover, placing a value on the returns of investments provides opportunities for effective interministerial and intersectoral dialogue and collaboration. Only a change of mindset that recognises the importance of evidence in decision-making will ensure the prioritisation of family planning investments to harness Africa’s demographic dividend.

Today’s second plenary session on the central place of citizen evidence in accelerating Africa’s Agenda 2063 progress at #Evi4DevConference emphasised the crucial role of citizen-generated evidence in shaping Africa’s development.

AFIDEP and @ppd_aro through Advance Domestic Health Financing project today led a panel discussion at the ongoing #Evi4DevConference in Nairobi, focusing on strategies to optimise domestic health financing for improved healthcare delivery in Africa.
During the session, AFIDEP’s Jackson Otieno pointed out that addressing inefficiencies in Africa’s healthcare workforce alone could unlock an estimated US$3–4 billion annually. These savings could be redirected towards enhancing the quality of healthcare across the continent.
The session was chaired by Patrick Mugirwa from the Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office (@ppd_aro ) and moderated by @DrCleopatraKama, Senior Fellow at AFIDEP.
The panel featured:
➡️ Dr Daniel Mwai, Presidential Economic Advisor (Kenya)
➡️ Mr. Patrick Zimpita, Principal Secretary for Economic Planning and Development at Malawi’s Ministry of Finance
➡️ Mr Kwame Owino (@IEAKwame), CEO of the Institute of Economic Affairs (@IEAKenya)
➡️ Prof. John Ele-Ojo Ataguba, Executive Director of the African Health Economics and Policy Association (@AfHEA_Africa ) and
➡️ Dr Bona Mukosha Chitah, Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Zambia (@UnzaOfficial).
