I seem to have hit a nerve. Within an hour of posting this above tweet, all kinds of caste activists, including many whom I had never engaged, have started to attack and tag all kinds of organization. I sense a fear of ideas and debate in these folks. Last week, I met a public official in the Bay Area with whom I disagree on many points vis a vis the entire caste debacle in the U.S. We were supposed to speak for 30 min and ended up speaking - animatedly - for over an hour. I was thankful that the official made time. But I was gladder about the agreement we had about the need to bring the community together after so much of division created by #SB403. All my posts on caste topic are ferociously focused on that idea: how to bring diverse voices on all sides of the diaspora together to have a substantive and CONSTRUCTIVE discussion. We ALL will benefit from that. The biggest beneficiaries will be our kids and their generation. That possible outcome alone is worth all the abuse and threats - subtle and not-so-subtle - I am getting. As I said to the official, Indian American parents will do all we can to protect our kids from harm. Even take a bullet, I said. Someone I respect - someone who facilitated the meeting and was in this meeting - said two bullets, if needed. All who intend to divide and destroy the community using the caste issue, bring it on. Indian American parents will stand in your way.
