The issues between India and US were building up since 2024. It is not a Trump phenomenon. US was supportive of India till the end of 2023 hoping patiently that India would join it against China. That patience ran out and you saw from 2024 that US acted against India’s interests such as Bangladesh, Pannun, Adani etc. India thought this is just Biden admin acting to weaken Modi and everything will be fine once Trump get back. Trump has not just continued with this policy but doubled down on it. US is now entrenched in Pakistan and Bangladesh. It just lifted sanctions on Myanmar, entering Maldives (through Turkey) & Sri Lanka (just provided some defense equipment). Things are about to get worse for India in the near future in the neighborhood. The calculation in DC is if India wants to be the third pole instead of being with US, then there is no need for US to aid India’s rise and it will work with China to make sure of that as seen in Bangladesh. This is not a Trump phenomenon but a Washington consensus. India will have to find a way to deal with this because it cant fight both US and China together. Russia is not a big power to come to India’s aid. It didn't even saved its ally Armenia against Azerbaijan and Iran against Israel. India will have to make a deal with US because it has no other choice. It will have to find a way to work with Trump no matter how difficult it is. Whatever Trump is doing to India, it had started under Biden already. Trump is just more open about it. India can't be so open and vocal about its aspirations when it is only a $4.2 trillion economy. China always wanted to be the number 1 superpower, but it didn't go around the world parroting this when it was of India's size. It worked closely with its main adversary and used it to become what it is today. India should do the same 'bide your time, hide your strength' for next 10 years.
