Lots of #chaetognath #arrowworm (Sagitta setosa) in the #exploreL4 samples this week. Voracious carnivores eating a variety of #zooplankton, they are frequently cannibalistic, able to swallow other chaetognaths of almost the same length. Thanks Dave Conway! @thembauk @CPRSurvey
This week #exploreL4; high numbers of the 'water flea' Penilia avirostris. Common in southern North Sea and French Atlantic coast, rarely found in the English Channel. Many females had eggs, which can overwinter in seabed, so a population may emerge next year. Thanks Dave Conway!

This week: #Sardine eggs (1.7mm) from #exploreL4. Take around 3-5 days to hatch, outer egg has bluish tinge with single, small oil globule. Larvae well developed inside, a scattering of faint pigment spots on body (eyes still unpigmented). Thanks Dave Conway @thembauk @CPRSurvey
