We document the construction of important buildings in our community and how their uses have changed throughout time. For example, Stanley House was originally the FIC Colonial Manager’s House in 1878.

For this month's #ExploreYourArchive theme of #Erased, we're looking at the 14th-century sedilia by the Abbey's High Altar.
The sedilia - seats used by the priests during Mass - date from around 1307 and feature richly decorated oak panels which were made by highly skilled craftsmen.
The panels were originally depicted eight figures, four on each side, including Henry III, Edward I and St Edward the Confessor.
However, not all of the paintings have survived. Some were destroyed during the Reformation and the Civil War whilst others have simply not survived the passage of time.
On the north side, the figures between the two kings - thought to have been St Peter and another saint - were obliterated. On the south side, the figure receiving Edward the Confessor's ring, probably St John the Evangelist disguised as a pilgrim, was also erased.

This month's #ExploreYourArchive theme is #surprise, so we're taking a look at this rare handwritten manuscript of The Courtier's Library by priest and poet John Donne which was discovered by chance in a tin trunk in our archives back in 2017.
A satirical attack on corruptions in the church and establishment, the manuscript was circulated privately by Donne to friends in the early 1600s, its content too radical to publish.
The only other known contemporary handwritten copy of the work in existence is at Trinity College, Cambridge. The Abbey manuscript, thought to date from 1603-04, is not in Donne’s own hand, but is the earliest surviving text - and one of the earliest literary works of the Jacobean reign.
