LIONEL SMITH BEALE (1828-1906)
Beale animates drawn pictures using his #Choreutoscope. This very simple optical toy is hand-held and handle-cranked, which draws a #lanternslide horizontally through the apparatus using a small gear.
Six images are seen successively for a split-second. No different than a #silentmovie, however the #skeletondances slowly or quickly, based on the speed you crank.
Here is a lantern slide for "The Avenging Rider" (1928) starring Tom Tyler and Frankie Darro. A one-reel fragment has survived and is at Gosfilmofond in Moscow.
