This change to Google's search results could move your website from the bottom to the top overnight. The key is in featured snippet optimization. And not every site is eligible – primarily due to the way their content is represented on the page. Instead of showing a single website within the featured snippet, Google is diversifying their answers by testing out showing up to 3 sites at a time, highlighting relevant sections from the page. In the example shown, you can see two different websites that have gone from ranking #5 and #8 (hidden down below) to now ranking at the very top of the page. For anyone that pays attention to CTR metrics for pages that rank in featured snippets compared to lower on the page, the difference can be like night and day. The pages up top get the vast majority of clicks. Generally, paragraph featured snippet optimization can come down to developing a well-researched, well-written and engaging article that provides the best answer in a 40-50 words snippet of content on the page. While similar principles apply to the new triple featured snippet test, Google seems to be focusing on a shorter snippet of text to fit within the space available, which appears to be up to a maximum of ~28 words. Moving forward, it could be smart to considering how well your content is optimized for featured snippets that have a max of 28 words as the parameter (rather than only using the reference for a max of 50 words). While the triple featured snippet is still just a test, Google is moving fast at the moment, so I wouldn't be surprised if this rolls out soon.
