Why This New Tax Reform Feels Like a Direct Attack on Survival in Nigeria I don’t have a problem with tax reform in principle. Every serious country needs revenue to function. What I have a problem with is taxing a people who are already struggling to breathe financially; people who are “getting enough money just to go broke.” Right now, millions of Nigerians are trapped in recycled debts. You borrow from A to pay B, collect from C to pay A, and pray the circle doesn’t break before month-end. In economics they call it “autonomous consumption” – the fancy way of saying even when your income is zero, a human being will still find a way to eat. If he can’t earn it, he will borrow, beg, or steal. That is the reality of Nigeria today. Yet the one thing this APC government has been painfully consistent about is terrible timing and zero empathy for people’s pain. Now they want to bring a new personal income tax regime that captures EVERY source of income – salary, business, crypto, betting wins, gifts, everything – starting reportedly January 2026. And the chairman of the Tax Reform Committee has already let it slip (directly or indirectly) that they can debit accounts straight if you can’t “prove” the source of funds or why you shouldn’t pay that much. Let that sink in. In a country where being a middleman is the only way many survive. Think about it: - How many hands touch one used car before it finally gets to the end buyer? - How many people move one bag of rice from Kano to Lagos and take their small cut? - How many “logistics guys,” agents, marketers, and runners will see N100 million, N200 million, even N500 million flow through their accounts this year and still end the year broke, owing landlords and schools? That money was never theirs. It was turnover, not profit. But the new system doesn’t care. An algorithm will just see “high inflow” on your BVN and assume you’re balling. Next thing, your account is frozen or debited “pending explanation.” Inflow ≠ wealth. Turnover ≠ profit. Survival ≠ luxury. This is not tax reform. This feels like a sophisticated revenue harvest timed perfectly ahead of the next election cycle. They need money – plenty of it – for 2027. And instead of blocking leakages, refining crude oil, fixing power, securing farms so food prices crash, or making life remotely bearable, the plan is to squeeze an already bleeding population. You don’t ask a man drowning in the river to pay tithe. First fix the country: - Give us steady light so businesses can breathe - Secure the roads so farmers can move food - Create real jobs, not “empowerment” photoshoots - Make healthcare something people can actually afford - Make Nigerians wake up grateful to be alive in their own country Do all that, show us you truly listen and care, and watch how willingly people will pay their fair share. Until then, this tax plan in its current shape and timing smells like punishment, not progress. The only way out is simple: Nigerians must wake up, look past the tribal and religious bait that will flood everywhere once 2027 draws close, and collectively vote out the so called cabal – regardless of tongue, faith, or party – that keeps recycling itself in different agbada and babariga.
