People who are appointed to do a job fail to do the job and nothing happens to them. Those who are affected and complain get arrested.
Today, Omar Champion Cham (Speaker of the National Youth Parliament - The Gambia), Marr Nyang (Executive Director of Gambia Participates), Fatou S Ndure (Youth Parliamentarian for Lower Niumi), Yai Demba (NBR Youth Women's Rep), Dean Darboe, Isatou Jallow (Banjul Youth Chairperson), and Abdou Bah (Youth Parliamentarian) are under illegal police detention and imposed with two bogus charges: (i) public nuisance and (ii) unlawful assembly.
This is the character of Dictatorship which is unfolding in the Gambia in broad daylight. The nature of Dictatorship is to close the civic space and then weaponize laws and institutions to target citizens who exercise their civil and political rights. This malpractice is manifesting itself in the increasing attacks on civic space and silencing dissent. Marr and Co are therefore a continuation of the long list of citizens who continue to be attacked by the Gambia Police Force which relies on the obnoxious Public Order Act to suppress voices and rights thereby killing Democracy.
This unfortunate scenario only confirms that the Gambia Government has grown unimaginably intolerant to divergent and dissenting opinions and has spared no effort in clamping down on fundamental freedoms with impunity. The practice of arbitrary arrests and detention have become normalized once again in the Gambia within just 8 years since the defeat of the evil dictatorship of Yaya Jammeh.
Why is this the case? The attacks on dissent and the civic space are purely an attempt to prevent transparency and accountability to cover up Government corruption, incompetence, inefficiency, and unprofessionalism. It is these conditions that are denying citizens from enjoying quality public services and better living conditions. The current poor ferry service is just one of the many failures of public institutions to serve the public. Since 2017, several protests for better public services have taken place to no avail. These include the #OccupyWestfield 2017, #Dafadoy 2019, #BringBackCheaperRates 2023 and now #SeesNen! 2024!
Until today, poor and erratic supply of electricity and water remains. Bad roads and lack of drainages cause flooding of homes and streets. The environment and the natural resources of the country are being sold out and destroyed while the cost of living is beyond the means of most citizens. These dire conditions are not created by Allah but by public institutions and officials who fail to perform and deliver as per the law and their terms of reference.
Interestingly, these institutions and officials are never arrested, detained, investigated, prosecuted, or jailed. Rather citizens who stand up to call them out get arrested, detained, prosecuted and jailed. Is this what the Constitution says about how the Gambia is to be governed? Certainly NO! Is this Democracy or Dictatorship?
