NYC socialist Claire Valdez faces calls for a federal probe after traveling to Mexico, meeting with members of the country's ruling left-wing Morena party, and vowing to carry Mexico's independence "fight" into Congress. Valdez, who is running to replace retiring Rep. Nydia Velazquez in Bushwick and Ridgewood, posted that "215 years ago, Mexicans fought an empire that demanded our land and our labor. And we won." She referred to Morena members as "comrades" standing up to "the empires and corporations that have always taken from us." Immigration attorney Alicia Nieves has called on the State Department to investigate Valdez under the Logan Act — a rarely enforced 1798 law that bars private citizens from conducting unauthorized diplomacy. Nieves argues Valdez, as a nominee and not a sitting member of Congress, may have discussed "facilitating support contrary to current U.S. policy."
