Why #videoanalyses of #microscopic organisms can provide a better #understanding of #functionalmorphology, shown here using the example of the #mite #species #Bonomoia #sibirica Wirth, 2016.
Even with high-resolution #microscopic technology, the function of individual #structures in microscopic organisms can often not be understood through purely morphological studies. Even direct observation of the behavior of living organisms using a #lightmicroscope or stereo microscope (#binocular) is often insufficient to understand the often very rapid #movement #sequences. Video analyses of previously recorded behaviors offer better opportunities to analyze individual movement sequences. Slow-motion recording can be helpful. An alternative is the analysis of individual #frames (single photos taken from a video file), which I performed here.
For several years, my research has focused on a better understanding of the functional morphology of structures in mites of the #Histiostomatidae (#Astigmata, #Acariformes). This includes a better understanding of the functioning of structures that have newly evolved in the stem species of the Histiostomatidae (#apomorphies). In addition to the highly complex, modified mouthparts of the free-living developmental stages and the striking pattern of muscle origin structures on the underside of the dispersal stage (deutonymph), which attaches itself to larger and more mobile arthropods to reach a new habitat (taxi principle), my research interests also include the modified two #hindlegs of the #deutonymphs. The attached images, which are frames from a video sequence, show the deutonymph of Bonomoia sibirica from behind as it attaches itself to the upper surface of its phoretic transporter (a bark beetle). During this process, one of the suckers is extended, seeking contact with the cuticle of the bark beetle. The forward-facing legs 3 and 4, which are also otherwise morphologically modified, support the precise approach of the mite's hind body with the #suckers to the beetle cuticle. This can be seen in both photos, from left to right, in two steps. These legs also play an important role in the subsequent process of detaching from the beetle, which can occur abruptly. My #speciesdescription of Bonomoia sibirica has been published as S. F. Wirth (2016). Further analyses of behavioral patterns, such as those described here, are not yet included in this publication.
