▶️ Unlike typical permineralization (where pores fill with calcite or pyrite), opalization involves total molecular replacement:
Hydroxyapatite dissolves and is substituted atom-for-atom by cryptocrystalline opal-CT or opal-A.
The result is bone that retains microscopic histology (Haversian canals, osteocyte lacunae) but now diffracts light into spectral colors due to orderly silica nanospheres (150–300 nm).
Colors range from milky white to fire-red “precious opal” play-of-color, depending on sphere packing and water content (3–21%).
▶️ Burial in silica-rich volcaniclastic sediments (e.g., Cretaceous floodplain ash beds in Australia’s Lightning Ridge or Coober Pedy).
Early acidic groundwater (pH ~2–4 from humic acids) dissolves bone apatite:
Ca₅(PO₄)₃(OH) + 5H⁺ → 5Ca²⁺ + 3HPO₄²⁻ + H₂O
Silica saturation from weathered feldspars or diatoms precipitates as gel in voids.
Gel → opal-CT → opal-A over 1–10 kyr; water loss triggers sphere ordering → play-of-color.
Final uplift & erosion exposes gemmy bone in opal “potch” matrix.
