A @NatureComms publication by @TargetMalaria @ImperialCollege researchers explores a new #genedrive approach in the malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae.
The findings suggest that the technology could be more resilient to the emergence of resistance, making it a promising option for malaria vector control.

#Malaria is a deadly disease, claiming the lives of over 600,000 people every year.
Current interventions against malaria such as bed nets, insecticides and drugs have helped save millions of lives but they are not enough. #GeneDrive technologies are being explored to complement existing tools and help eliminate malaria.
For #WorldMalariaDay this year, we are opening up our labs to help explain how gene drive mosquitoes are developed.
The gene drive video series is a series of four videos explaining how our researchers in the United Kingdom and Italy develop gene drive mosquitoes. View the first part here: https://t.co/EbCYulBJxb

This #WorldMalariaDay, ALMA’s Senior Director, Dr Abraham Mnzava, speaks about the potential of #genedrive technology. This work is being led by institutions such as @ifakarahealth and could become an important complementary tool in the fight against #malaria.
He also highlights the need for strong policy support to help bring new interventions into use. He stresses the importance of critical considerations such as biosafety and regulatory oversight as this technology continues to develop.

Vaccines. Bed nets. Chemoprevention. Insecticides.
@ALMA_2030 shows 24 African countries are using
every tool available and it's working.
Investments in the latest tools such as #GeneDrive and health systems are needed to reach every child.
This #WorldMalariaDay: Grasp the moment. Protect lives now. Fund a #malaria-free future.
Now We Can. Now We Must.

We can #EndMalaria. Not someday, but in our lifetime.
For the first time, that's not ambition. It's real. Science is advancing faster than ever. New vaccines, treatments, #Malaria control tools and pioneering technologies, including #GeneDrive, and long-acting injectables, are in development.
Already, 25 countries are rolling out malaria vaccines to protect 10 million children a year. Next-generation mosquito nets now make up 84% of all new nets distributed.
Nationally-led programmes are driving change.
But malaria doesn't wait. When funding falls and programmes weaken, it comes back fast, killing hundreds of thousands more children and reversing hard-won gains.
The possibility has never been greater. And neither has the cost of letting it slip.

Gene drive could complement bed nets, insecticides, and vaccines; investment in research needs to be increased. #GeneDrive increases the chance of inheritance so a chosen genetic trait spreads through a mosquito population. It is a new tool being explored to reduce malaria transmission in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Robert Malone.
Malaria remains a threat to millions of people in Africa, and new tools are needed to help fight the disease.
