The #YouthDay2024 Gen S Programme will host Grade 11-12 learners interested in science, health & mathematical fields.
Learners will receive an opportunity to gain first-hand practical experience in the careers available through the SAMRC.

@MRCza #GenSprogramme Day 4 ended with a protein determination & visualization demo at Centre for Cardio-metabolic Research in Africa (CARMA) at @SUhealthsci Division of Medical Physiology where students performed a Bradford assay – a technique used to detect & quantify protein
@MRCza #GenSprogramme Day 3 ended off with a trips to the MAGIC Lab 🪄 at MBHG
Here the @SUTBHostGen hosted the #GenS students for a Sanger Sequencing illustration – a method used to sequence genetic material by way of in vitro DNA replication using fluorescent molecules
@MRCza #GenSprogramme Day 3 kicked off with a bang 💥
The @tbgenomics group at MBHG, led by SAMRC Centre for TB Research Unit Director Prof Rob Warren, hosted the #GenS students for a DNA extraction demo – a technique used to isolate genetic material for genetic sequencing 🧬🧪
Day 2 of the @MRCza #GenSprogramme ended with a Lab automation session hosted by @SUpsychgenetics Lab at MBHG. Here #GenS students learnt performed a speed test practical to highlight the increased cost-effectiveness, efficiency & reducedwaste afforded by specialised equipment
Activity 2 on Day 2 of @MRCza #GenSprogramme had @SUAnimalTB at MBHG hosting the #GenS students for an Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) demo – a technique used to detect a molecule of interest in a sample to aid in disease screening, diagnostics, drug testing and more.
@MRCza #GenSprogramme Day 2 started off with a PBMC isolation demo – a technique used to isolate and investigate the function of white blood cells more specifically lymphocyte (specialize immune cells) - hosted by Dr Emily Tangie within @SuImmunology at @SUhealthsci
@MRCza #GenSprogramme Day 1 ended with the @tbgenomics Lab at MBHG hosting the #GenS students for a pipetting competency practical to ensure proper use for the exciting hands-on activities taking place over the next 3-days 🥼
On #Day1 of @MRCza #GenSprogramme learners were treated to a campus tour @SUhealthsci followed by a very important Lab Safety Talk from SITT secretariat and Lab Technical officer Mrs Caitlyne Young before entering and working in our state-of-the-art laboratories at MBHG.
This campaign was developed in commemoration of #YouthDay & aimed to promote careers in STEM to #SAYouth
During the 4-day @MRCz #GenSprogramme, learners were exposure to a variety of molecular techniques @SUhealthsci Dep of Biomedical Sciences through curated hands-on activities
