Georgia Tech 222 - Cumberland 0
On October 7, 1916, one of the most infamous games in college football history took place as Georgia Tech, coached by the legendary John Heisman, routed Cumberland College with a staggering score of 222-0. This remains the most lopsided victory in the history of U.S. college football.
Cumberland College had already disbanded its football program earlier that year but was compelled to play the game due to a contractual obligation that would otherwise have incurred a substantial financial penalty. As a result, Cumberland assembled a team of mostly non-football players, including law students and fraternity members. With minimal experience on the field, the outcome proved disastrous.
Georgia Tech, a football powerhouse under Heisman’s direction, took full advantage of their overmatched opponent, scoring on nearly every possession. Cumberland failed to make a single first down and ended the game with negative 28 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech amassed 978 total yards and scored 63 points in both the first and second quarters, followed by 54 points in the third and 42 in the fourth.
John Heisman, for whom the famed Heisman Trophy is named, was known for his innovative coaching techniques and tactical brilliance. Heisman did not aim to humiliate Cumberland, but rather believed in scoring as many points as possible since margin of victory was a key factor in determining rankings at the time. While the game showcased Heisman’s offensive firepower, it is remembered more for the sheer imbalance of the contest and its record-setting score.

@illumiteers I like artist sketches, coming from a comic book background. I’ve got a Stan Sakai sketch on a back board that I kept bagged for years before I finally got around to slabbing. #getslabbed @Paul_Lesko
