after yesterday's #gigsof2018 post, I'll finally draw a line under 2018 by posting some #albumsof2018 throughout the day. Happy new year (and I'm glad that one is behind us all)
*drum roll* #gigsof2018 1.Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Victoria Park Hackney, 3rd June. It had been a long time since I had seen the Bad Seeds and I had almost forgotten how special they are, plus Nick made the massive park seem small. Unforgettable. https://t.co/tEmWNd3oha
#gigsof2018 2. My Bloody Valentine at Robert Smith’s Meltdown, June 23rd. When your favourite band slots a new untitled song into an already strong set it can’t fail to be one of your highlights of the year. Could do with some new mbv in 2019 though ;) https://t.co/9orB8iA11S
#gigsof2018 4. The Notwist at Robert Smith’s Meltdown, 16th June. I had forgotten how good they were, but there was a ten minute section in the middle of this excellent show that was probably the very best thing I saw all year.
#gigsof2018 6. Teenage Fanclub at the Electric Ballroom, November 15th. I went to all three of these Creation-era shows, but the 3rd night gets my vote for the lovely, yet understated farewell to Gerry Love.
#gigsof2018 7. A Hawk and A Hacksaw in the Blue Moon in Cambridge April 23rd. A joyous experience from start to finish, transcendent folk tunes.
#gigsof2018 9. Brigid Mae Power, my first time seeing her at the very intimate Servant Jazz Quarters in Dalston, March 27th
#gigsof2018 11. Oh Sees at Cambridge Junction, July 13th. The second time I saw them in 2018, this one gets the nod as smaller venue meant a more intense show.
#gigsof2018 12. Yo La Tengo at the Royal Festival Hall on May 4th. They supported themselves too. Double Yo La Tengo :) https://t.co/iFzAxKHkgh
#gigsof2018 13. Hot Snakes at the Portland Arms in Cambridge on Jan 31st. A total pleasure to see one of the great rock bands in this small space.
#gigsof2018 14. Low at Robert Smith's Meltdown, 20th June. They sounded immense, without hinting how overwhelming the imminent Double Negative album would be.
#gigsof2018 15. Superchunk and Oblivians in ULU, May 29th A cracking double bill.
some #gigsof2018 stats. I saw 6 sets from Teenage Fanclub and 4 from Robyn Hitchcock, as both of them supported themselves each time I saw Oh Sees, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Gwenifer Raymond twice each. My top 15 coming up...
Here's the #gigsof2018 post I promised last night. 42 gigs attended, 79 acts seen. During 2018 I saw my 1000th show. In a happy coincidence it was Yo La Tengo’s Royal Festival Hall show, which made them my most seen (touring) band
