The road had turned muddy by the time we departed from the Throne today, but upper elevations had over two feet of new snow (4/7). Until the temperatures warm back up, our primary concern is avalanches within the new and wind-drifted snow. These are plenty big enough!

While I probably should have been funnier for my April Fool's Day video, this is what you need to know from our field day in the Centennials on April 1st.

An enormous avalanche broke last night or early this morning when a cornice fell onto the north face of Mount Blackmore (3/11). We toured into look at several recent avalanche in Beehive Basin and reiterate the fact that not all avalanche terrain is created equal.

We toured Bacon Rind today (3/4) looking for an avalanche reported on March 2. We found two avalanches on slopes that I have never seen slide before. Be careful and remain conservative with your terrain choices if you have plans to be in and around avalanche terrain.

We got another wake up call while riding at Buck Ridge today (2/13), when we triggered a large avalanche that broke hundreds of feet wide and piled debris 6-8 feet deep. The mountains continue to communicate the avalanche danger in the clearest terms.

We triggered a huge collapse and shooting cracks as we skinned toward the top of the Throne today (2/12). I got scared, and for the third time in a row, we chose to turn around before reaching the top. Follow https://t.co/I8wR19RqHj for the latest conditions.

Persistent weak layer plus 10-12" of new snow equals dangerous avalanche conditions in the Taylor Fork (and across much of SW MT). Enjoy the new snow, but we highly recommend doing so on slopes less than 30 degrees and avoiding the runout zones of steeper pitches

Fewer in-your-face signs of instability DOES NOT mean conditions are safe in Island Park. The ingredients for an avalanche are present and triggering one remains likely. Ride and ski on slopes less than 30 degrees and be cautious crossing below steep slopes.

We triggered an avalanche in First Yellowmule at Buck Ridge today (1/22) from 750 feet away. Dangerous avalanche conditions exist across the forecast area. Conditions will stabilize slowly, but not until it stops snowing and blowing. Stay heads up and stay safe!

On the last day of this arctic blast (1/15), we found a universally weak snowpack, but not one that was universally unstable. This means you have to do your homework and test before considering traveling in steeper terrain.

On Jan. 11, we toured north of Bridger Bowl after a foot of low-density snow fell. The snow was light and fell with minimal winds. Our concerns are loose snow avalanches (sluffs) and the incrementally testing or our weak snowpack by the weight of new snow.

On January 2, Dave forced Doug to tour into Bacon Rind. Doug complained a lot about the snow cover. In between complaints, he explained why conditions are generally safe right now.

Ian and Doug rode into Taylor Fork to put up the weather station and look at the snowpack. They found a snowpack that was mostly faceted and weak. Avalanches are possible on slopes with a wind load or stiff slab above this weak layer.

The abundant signs of instability we found on our tour south of Cooke City caught me off guard. My partner and I felt that triggering an avalanche would be likely if we ventured into avalanche terrain.
I am worried, and we are avoiding steep slopes.

Triggering a large avalanche is becoming much less likely above Hebgen Lake since last week's avalanche warning. Still, we remain wary because if you find the wrong spot, trigger an avalanche, and get caught, the result could easily be unsurvivable.

We are forecasted to get snow and are finding that even a little bit can tip the scales and create deep avalanches.
