#GrantSinger's feature-film directorial debut is a dark and suspenseful thriller featuring Detective Tom Nichols (played by Benicio Del Toro), who embarks on a murder case that leads him to question the trustworthiness of everyone, including himself. The film has been slated by critics, but I thought it was a decent dirty cop movie.
The crime revolves around the murder of real estate agent Summer Elswick (portrayed by Matilda Lutz), whose relationship with fellow broker Will Grady (Justin Timberlake) appears to be cooling. Will's mother, Camille (Frances Fisher), owns the agency, adding complexity to the investigation. Potential suspects include Summer's estranged husband and someone with a grudge against Will stemming from a past real estate deal.
Nichols carries a shadow from his past, related to a former partner but seemingly not implicating him directly. However, as signs emerge that his current colleagues may be manipulating events for personal gain, Nichols becomes understandably suspicious of everyone, including his paternal boss, Captain Allen (Eric Bogosian), and some of his co-workers. A further layer of intrigue arises when Captain Allen confides in Nichols about a serious illness, making Nichols complicit in keeping it a secret.
Nichols has two loves in his life: his wife, Judy (Alicia Silverstone), and his career as a police officer. As he confronts the web of lies and secrets around him, his suspicions extend to everyone, even his wife, who has no apparent connection to the murder, but has become friendly with a handsome contractor working on their kitchen sink. Nichols faces the challenging task of solving the case without jeopardising his marriage.
Benicio Del Toro, who contributed to the script alongside Singer and Benjamin Brewer, takes on a substantial role that defies expectations. Rather than portraying him as a potential murderer or suspect, Del Toro's character emerges as a determined detective with an intense dedication to his work. His selflessness is evident, even leading to discomfort when he is nominated for a police award following a confrontation requiring the use of his weapon.
Justin Timberlake, known for his boyish charm, adds an element of ambiguity to his role, leaving the audience uncertain whether he is a grieving victim or potentially linked to the murder. Alicia Silverstone also introduces a sense of intrigue as she portrays Judy, leaving viewers questioning whether she is a faithful wife or engaged in an affair.
Before this, Singer, was a well known music video director, and I hope the negative critically reaction his first movie has received doesn't put off from making more features. He maintains a tight narrative focus from Nichols' perspective, effectively involving the audience in his suspicions, and it's a handsomely piece of work.
Reptile showcases Grant Singer's promise as a filmmaker and provides Benicio Del Toro with an opportunity to expand his acting repertoire. The films starts off intriguingly, however, it does lose its way in the final third. The new Netflix movie doesn't reinvent the crime drama wheel, but I appreciated its nihilism and pessimistic view of humanity.
