The official iSpace statement says there was a problem with the laser rangefinder taking too long leaving the spacecraft too little time to decelerate. The way I read this is that It was operating fine, then when it transitioned to the final descent mode it reduced the deceleration while waiting for the LIDAR to get the altitude. during this time it's still moving towards the moon at about 50-60m/sec When it got the reading it was too close to decelerate to zero, and pancaked.
