Species 42/50: Eastern river cooter, found 1,600 feet from my apartment. I find it hard to tell apart a lot of our aquatic turtles but this species tends to be more adapted for flowing water, hence the sleek carapace. . . . . #herpsofnc #pseudemys

At least 20 northern water snakes in a 5 yard-wide pile of rocks today. And those were just the ones that ventured above ground. North Carolina’s own version of the more famous garter snake breeding balls out west. . . . #herpsofnc #nerodia
