Also one of the oldest pictures of St. Luke from the Gospel Book of St. Augustine, a sixth-century manuscript now in Parker Library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, shows him without the #Hodegetria, instead of with a book and an ox: https://t.co/3sVoHE8Y3d

Thus, it would be nice to assume the whole figure of #Hodegetria was somehow created in #RomanSyria and #Palmyra. Still, just a flattering assumption, there is no evidence enough. One of the oldest pictures of Virgin Mary is the Madonna from San Sisto - without a child ...

Some of the oldest representations of #Hodegetria from West and Egypt - note the resemblance to the Mummy portraiture. And the text on them from the @UniofOxford page: https://t.co/szG601I6GQ

St. Cathrine's Monastery, Sinai, the Icon of the enthroned Virgin and Child - otherwise the Mother of God #Hodegetria - with saints and angels, 6th century. According to a legend, the theme of Hodegetria was the one created by St. Luke - still the most widespread Christian image
