Their wedding was planned for August 1988, although it was later postponed when Howes successfully applied for a tour of duty in #NorthernIreland. By March, he had arrived in the Province of #Ulster only about a week before his death. At 23, he was still at the beginning of adult life, with a marriage ahead of him and a military career still unfolding. On 19th March 1988, Howes and fellow Royal Corps of Signals corporal #DerekWood were travelling in Belfast in civilian clothes and a civilian car. The circumstances surrounding their presence near the funeral procession remain important to understanding what happened: they had entered an area where security forces had been instructed to keep away, and contemporary accounts indicate that the two soldiers appear to have driven into the procession inadvertently. The atmosphere was exceptionally tense. Three days earlier, loyalist gunman Michael Stone had attacked an #PIRA funeral at #Milltown Cemetery, killing three people and wounding many others. The funeral taking place on 19th March was therefore surrounded by fear and suspicion. When the two soldiers' car became trapped among the mourners, those fears turned upon them. What followed was witnessed and recorded by television cameras. The crowd surrounded the vehicle and attacked it. Wood fired a single shot into the air, while the two men otherwise did not use their weapons. They were dragged from the car, assaulted and taken away. Later, both were #shot #dead in waste ground in west Belfast. The British Parliament subsequently described the events in the House of Commons, while the Royal Signals Museum records that both men were killed on 19th March 1988. Howes was 23 years old. A photograph taken afterwards showed Father Alec Reid beside Howes as he administered the last rites. The image became one of the enduring photographs associated with the Troubles — but behind that image was not merely a soldier caught in a historic event.
