The CEO of cryptocurrency hedge fund HyperVerse, now defunct, does not appear to exist, according to a report by the Guardian Australia.
The man that was introduced to investors in Dec. 2021 as Steven Reece Lewis supposedly had a degree from the University of Leeds and a master's from the University of Cambridge before working for Goldman Sachs, and later selling web development company to Adobe, the Guardian reports.
On social media, Lewis shared celebrity endorsements of Hyperverse from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, actor Chuck Norris, former NSYNC member Lance Bass and comedian Jim Norton.
However neither university, Goldman Sachs, nor Adobe has a record of a Steven Reece Lewis and his name could not be found in the UK companies register or the U.S. SEC, the Guardian reports.
HyperVerse, formerly called Hyperfund, collapsed in 2022 after facing warnings from overseas regulators that it was a possible scam and suspected pyramid scheme. Thousands of investors have lost more than $1.3 billion as a result.
The company was established by Australian Sam Lee and Zijing (Ryan) Xu, both of whom also founded the now collapsed Australian bitcoin company Blockchain Global.
The company sold investors on membership paid in cryptocurrency with returns paid in "hyper units", the Guardian reports. Members were also incentivized to bring in new investors.
Less than a day after the Guardian report was published, finance blogger Jack Gamble known as "Nobody Special" used reverse image searches and social media to find a man who appears to look and sound exactly like Lewis. That man, also named Steve, but with a different last name, is from the U.K. and resides in Bangkok.
