Dear #IAWD, #WorldBankSerbia #GIZ #EU, as key stakeholders and valued partners in efforts to ensure safe and sustainable water supply to the citizens of Niš, of a significant potential threat to the Studena water resource. The Studena water source is a critical asset, providing potable water to a substantial portion of the Niš metropolitan area. Its protection is paramount to public health, economic stability, and environmental sustainability in our region.
We have recently become aware of a new Master Plan, where exploration drilling and mining operations are planned near the Studena catchment area as a continuation of previously stopped actions https://t.co/vzKe3mXJpl.
Preliminary assessments by our experts indicate that these activities pose a credible risk of chemical and sedimentation contamination to the aquifer. Such contamination could compromise water quality, endanger public health, and potentially disrupt water supply continuity. We think that you should be aware of that fact, as our major donors and partners, who invested significantly in the modernization, efficiency, and resilience of Niš's water infrastructure through Public utility Company "Naissus." This potential threat directly risks the sustainability of those investments and the outcomes of your collaborative projects. Therefore, our suggestion is to take the following immediate steps:
1. Formally engaging with relevant national and regional environmental, mining, and inspection authorities to request a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and a rigorous review of all data related to the planned operations;
2. Commissioning independent hydrological and geochemical studies to model potential contamination pathways and risks specific to the Studena resource; and
3. Contacting City of Niš officials and relevant institutions to guarantee the primacy of water resource protection during the process of adoption of the Master Plan.
We are informing you because we believe a coordinated response is essential, and therefore kindly request using your institutional voice to emphasize the importance of applying the highest environmental and precautionary standards in this matter, and exploring avenues for collaborative advocacy or technical missions to relevant authorities to highlight the critical importance of protecting this vital water source. We are committed to keeping you informed as the situation develops. We will promptly share our findings and official communications with the authorities, because the protection of the Studena water resource is the key for keeping this valuable asset intact from future negative actions.
