I don’t think #iawm has anything to do with Classical Arabic, it’s more like the Syriac #iawmo, while #iom feels closer to the #Canaanite form. But here’s the thing: in Lebanese, anything we say with #iawm in it, like #iawmeie (يومية) , the #w is clear. It’s really only with that one word iom that the #w disappears in some regions. We still say: iawmeie, iawmain, iawmak enta, iawmek ente… Thinking about it that way is what made me decide that ou is best in the standard.
