Thought provoking storyline. Sadly a storyline that is a real event that lots of people face on a daily basis.
Great performance and it was a good watch!
4 indie films all released on this day in their respective years; which is the best, and why?

I know now why I did.
@wallerkd70 @Rod__Mason @Richard46816941 Interesting point you raise as ‘work’ in a tenuous sense given so many purport to be self employed claim minimum wage & pay themselves dividends I mean if they paid tax akin to PAYE then great but no let’s attack the most vulnerable in society cos ya know it’s easy #IDanielBlake
@FraserNelson It’s unwatchable.

I, Daniel Blake (2016) by Ken Loach
#IDanielBlake #DaveJohns #HayleySquires
Daniel Blake is a carpenter from Newcastle who, at the age of 59, suffers a serious heart attack which no longer allows him to work. Having fallen into the maze of state welfare bureaucracies, he is first denied disability benefits and then ends up in a quirky limbo of rules, waiting to be able to appeal for the failure to grant disability support. In the meantime, in order to access the unemployment subsidy, our man is forced to work hard to look for a job even if, due to a strict medical prohibition, he is unable to do it. Feisty and indomitable, Daniel works hard to see his rights recognized against a pedantic system of procedures and formalisms that seems artfully designed against the citizen. Extraordinary drama of social denunciation, directed with lucid sobriety and biting controversy by Ken Loach, a director of admirable coherence and constant civil commitment, always detached from the commercial logic of the great majors of mainstream cinema and always at the forefront as a caustic story-teller of marginalized people of Western capitalism. In this vibrant new work, deservedly awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the British author puts the English welfare system on the grill, the elephantine bureaucracy that distinguishes it, the elitist policies of a system that always benefits the most wealthy and health assessment models that do not correspond to the real needs of the citizen. His painful J'accuse does not disdain the use of a sharp black irony which, on the one hand, never diminishes the necessary level of indignation and, on the other, increases the dose of his invective through a grotesque distortion which it casts a ridiculously disturbing light on state power. The initial dialogue on a black screen, while the opening titles roll, is already absolutely memorable and immerses us in the theme of the film. Loach leads us by the hand, constantly alongside his characters, into the no man's land of the alienated expelled from the opulent table of consumerism, into the ghettos where immigrants and the unemployed struggle every day to survive, children of a lesser god expelled from the system. On the other hand, the director contrasts the squalor of state distortions with the overwhelming humanity of his protagonists, the solidarity between disadvantaged classes which, at times, arises and manages to keep the dignity of man alive, even in a context of degradation and of desperation. This very bitter document of our time is an important, touching, necessary film, capable of moving without any patheticness and of arousing a sacrosanct indignation against the social injustices of the Western governmental model. And Daniel's desperate struggle is the same one that the director has always fought: the ideological struggle of a free man who forcefully flaunts his beliefs, opposes discrimination, condemns injustices and rejects the mass technology that has transformed citizens into consumers. Minimal aesthetics at the service of social denunciation has always been Loach's trademark and this film can be seen as the solemn artistic (and political) summa of his entire career.
