USD 88.6 billion leaves Africa every year through illicit financial flows (#IFFs). Nearly twice the annual official development aid Africa receives.
And yet, African youth are routinely left out of #budget consultations, parliamentary debates, and international #tax negotiations.
Three broken promises. SDG 6. SDG 10. SDG 16.
#Inequality in Africa is a product of fiscal systems that allow wealth to exit without being taxed and public services to go unfunded. That is something advocacy, organising, and political pressure can change.

The result is an economy that is structurally non-inclusive.African countries export crude, import refined products, and remain exposed to global markets while much of the value and profit leave the continent with multinational oil companies. @GreenAghnet @YCED_Uganda @WogemU

Ms Rebecca @RMKabejja said, "If we choose to take a back seat, we shall not be able to afford our countries as young Africans."
Africa loses approx $89 billion annually to #IFFs (illicit financial flows). Over 20 African countries are in or near #debt #distress. And the decisions being made right now about debt, #taxes, and public resources will shape this continent for the next generation.
Young Africans need to be a part of these conversations. And when we are absent, someone else fills that space. With their priorities. Not ours.
Ms Rebecca did not stop at the warning, but rather gave us a way forward.
We cannot work as individuals. We have to organise. And organising starts with making sure every young person understands what is at stake, in language that is clear, accessible, and actionable.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), Hafsat Abubakar Bakari, joined other stakeholders at the 5th Session of the @_AfricanUnion Sub-Committee on Tax and Illicit Financial Flows #IFFs, in Abuja, contributing to critical discussions on strengthening fiscal policy and tackling illicit financial flows across Africa.
Webinar: Examining how a fair UNFCITC can reduce Africa’s reliance on aid and debt by addressing illicit financial flows and strengthening DRM and gender equality
Africa #loses billions every year to illicit financial flows (#IFFs). At the same time, aid is shrinking, and #debt is rising. The global #taxsystem is a big part of why.
The UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation (UNFCITC) is a chance to change that. But only if African countries negotiate for fair taxing rights.
@SEATINIUGANDA, @amwaafrika, and YTJN are bringing together experts to examine what a fair #UNTaxConvention looks like for Africa and what it means for our development financing.
📅: Thursday, 9 April 2026
⏰: 2:30 – 4:00 PM EAT
What we will cover:
1⃣The implications of the evolving #aid and debt architecture on #resource #mobilisation and social service delivery in Africa
