Today we discovered small crystals of the rare #ikaite in a freshly opened #gravitycorer #core drilled in a #greenland fjord during the #MSM111 research cruise last year. The drill core so far was stored refrigerated at 4 degrees - otherwise the #ikait would have already decayed.

@MineralCup I'm voting for Ikaite this round because its look resembles the Desert Star minerals from my undergraduate research. It's also pretty cool that it forms in near-freezing water! @rockswhisperer do you remember the one on the left??

This and at least one other picture of #ikaite remind me of cartoon creatures of some sort. That plus being a new-to-me mineral that grows in really weird conditions (near freezing water - what!) mean I'm going with it over the beautiful cinnabar. Literally and figuratively cool.
